IS IT CHEAPER TO PAINT OR REPLACE KITCHEN CABINETS?

THE COST TO PAINT OR REPLACE CABINETS IS ALWAYS SUBJECTIVE

When getting quotes for painting their cabinets, my parents were shocked at the disparity between the quotes. Until they took a good look at the estimates than it became clear that the quality .of the paint job affected the overall price greatly. Price difference between a cheap paint and  top quality paint can be $100 or more, multiply that by 2 or 3 gallons and you are on your way to a costly bid.

Add things like grain filler, expensive primer, extra coats of paint and a high 0tech spray facility, and the same cabinets can cost 2X as much in certain circumstances.

A good rule of thumb is to take the number of doors and drawers and multiply that number by $125. That will usually get you close. If your contractor is way under or way over, get another opinion.

Replacing your cabinets is the same as painting them, only, there happens to be a much larger gap in pricing between the cheapest and most expensive. Basically, when you are thinking of replacing your cabinets, understand, that their will ultimately be a cost to remove the old cabinets, as there will be to install the new cabinets. Both of these together will be around $1200-$1500. Add that to the cost of brand new doors, and you will easily spend around $5000 for average, run of the mill cabinets.
